Towards Bordeaux

The paths that lead to the gates of the Gironde and Bordeaux pass through a variety of surroundings. The pine woods are reminiscent of the forests in the nearby Landes and the valley of the Seugne has an air of the Touraine. On the banks of the Gironde, the rolling hills planted with vines and cereals seem to dance on the sheer cliffs rising up from the river and the marshes.

The church at Talmont-sur-Gironde, standing on its promontory, is one of the essential sights of Saintonge. In this rugged landscape, where there is a unique panorama at the top of every slope, can be found the Château de Beaulon, in Saint-Dizant-du Gua. Dating from the 15th century, the château was made available to the Bishops of Bordeaux in the 17th century and now stands at the heart of a vineyard and park with springs of azure blue. These Blue Fontains give the walk a feeling of the supernatural.

Other mysteries will appear at the Château d’Usson, nicknamed the Château of Enigmas, close to the historic town of Pons. It was moved stone by stone in the 19th century and is now the scene of a clever and educational treasure hunt. As they search for clues, families discover the park, the underground passages, the very beautiful Renaissance facades and the astonishing winter garden.
